Getting Started

To get started you need to do 3 things:

  1. Change your outgoing mail server to "mail" in your mail software (without the quotes)
  2. List your outgoing mail servers and what network addresses they are associated with in MailSwitch
  3. Update the mail server (need to do this for the first time you enter the list of outgoing mail servers, or if you change the list of mailservers, or if you change networks without rebooting)

Changing Your Outgoing Mail Server

Here's where you will change your outgoing mail server for the last time. Load your email software and edit the settings for your email accounts (for example in Outlook, go to "Tools", then "Email Accounts" and "Change" each email account such that the outgoing mail server is set to "mail" (without the quotes). Make a note of the original values for the outgoing mail server because you will enter these into MailSwitch.

Once the outgoing  mail server is set to "mail" for all your email accounts you are ready to setup MailSwitch for operation.

Creating your outgoing mailserver list in MailSwitch

Install MailSwitch and run the program (either from the Startup folder or by rebooting your machine). The icon will be red world indicating no mail server was found. Right click on the red globe and choose the "Setup Mail Servers" option. A screen will appear with a table for entering your mailserver information. Each row of the table represents a mailserver and network grouping.

The row contains four values:

  1. Nickname - This is a nickname you are giving the mailserver. This name will appear when you are connected to the mailserver if the mouse is over the MailSwitch icon (world)
  2. Mailserver address - This is the name of the outgoing mailserver (i.e. smtp.earthlink.net) or the actual IP address of the mail server (209.63.147.93)
  3. From IP address - Both a "From" and "To" IP address field are provided for use as a standalone connection of router connection where the router provides a range of IP addresses to the local computer network. The "From" ip address would be the lowest IP address provided by the router (ex. 192.168.1.50)
  4. To IP address - The "To" IP address would be the highest IP address provided by the router (ex. 192.168.1.200)
Complete a separate row for each outgoing email server that you may use. If  the range of addresses spans past the last bit value (eg. 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.2.200) you must enter a separate row for each range of IP addresses (i.e. one row for 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.200 and another row for 192.168.2.1 to 192.168.2.200) since the program assumes the first three bits of the IP address (ex. 192.168.1) are the same in the "From" and "To" IP address values.

MailSwitch Maintenance

MailSwitch is loaded into the startup folder so that it will load every time the computer boots up. It will merrily keep switching mail servers based on your list and IP address and you will not need to make any changes unless you change a service provider (outgoing mail server).

Troubleshooting

Windows XP has a reputation for loosing system tray icons. This is especially a problem for users that automatically logon. If the MailSwitch icon fails to appear try the following remedies:

1. Log off and log back on manually
2. Disable universal plug and play UPNP in the services (Start - Run - services.msc)
3. Repair the system tray (and taskbar if required) http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/taskbarplus!.htm
